Questions AWS doesn’t want you asking about Transfer Family
The AWS Transfer Family is popular with procurement teams, but MFT administrators have more difficult questions to answer.
Is the AWS Transfer Family an MFT solution?
There is no official definition for MFT, but at its core it is considered to be a solution which centralizes and governs file movements in, out, and around business networks. The AWS Transfer Family achieves this outcome, but not as a single delivered solution. Rather, it is a collection of AWS technologies which when combined provides MFT capabilities.
For example, AWS Transfer Family could utilize a server with an SFTP interface, with an S3 bucket mounted for storage, AWS Cloud Trail, Amazon EventBridge, and Amazon Simple Notification Services – to send an email on receipt of a file via SFTP.
This all seems unnecessarily complex and is out-of-the-box functionality for a single deployment of Axway SecureTransport.
What is the true cost of AWS Transfer Family?
This will depend on your usage and can be complex. Accurately scoping your requirements is of high importance in determining your budget as costs can creep up if you go beyond your scope.
AWS prices the Transfer Family on region; number of protocol interfaces per hour of up-time; whether you want a web interface and how many; number of endpoints and messages sent/received via AS2; number of S3 buckets or Elastic File Storage (EFS) and expected storage levels each month; whether there will be any automated file transfer workflows and how many; the number of outbound connections made over SFTP and the number of list commands issues versus size of returned result.
As you can see, it is quite complex and for some, next to impossible to accurately determine ahead of the invoice.
Does AWS Transfer Family support my wider ecosystem?
That depends on how embedded you are into the AWS ecosystem. AWS Transfer Family works with AWS technology and doesn’t really support anything else. Files are stored in S3 or EFS, keys are stored in the AWS Key Manager and events and reporting can only be exported to centralization tools like Splunk through the REST API.
Is the AWS Transfer Family available for on-premises or hybrid needs?
No. The AWS Transfer Family is a cloud solution only.
What is most complained about by former and current AWS Transfer Family customers?
According to review sites such as G2 and conversations with former and current customers, common complaints include the complexity of pricing and missing capabilities. It is sometimes described as “lightweight.” Consistent feedback is that AWS Transfer Family becomes expensive and unpredictable where there are needs for high-volumes and rapid scalability.
How easy is the AWS Transfer Family to use?
This would be relative to your experience with AWS technologies. It can be a leap for existing MFT engineers to become Transfer Family experts as it requires background experience with additional services such as AWS Lambda, EventBridge, S3 and more. In addition, a common complaint is the complexity of setup and support due to this very reason.
