Questions Fortra avoids about GoAnywhere
Determining the right MFT solution for your enterprise means asking tough questions that Fortra really doesn't want to address. Here are some answers that might explain why:
Why does Fortra have two managed file transfer solutions?
HelpSystems (rebranded to Fortra in 2022) acquired Globalscape EFT in 2020. Globalscape was one of the top MFT vendors prior to acquisition, giving Fortra command over a huge customer list. But how does this ensure appropriate funding for R&D in both solutions? GoAnywhere is clearly the better of the two but is it getting the internal attention it should be?
Is the GoAnywhere gateway really a forward-proxy too?
In some cases. Projects and tasks relying on outbound connections via traditional protocols such as FTPS and SFTP will go via the gateway if configured to do so. However, cloud connectors, such as those that connect to dynamics CRM and SAP, will make a direct connection from the GoAnywhere server to the destination, meaning you have to bypass the gateway and open more firewall ports.
Why is Fortra support so often complained about?
We don’t have access to Fortra’s support statistics, but we do have feedback from several former customers who expressed concerns about slow response times due to time zones and challenges with escalations. A common trick we have learned from customers is that you can get faster attention by phoning – sorry email tickets owners, you are going to be waiting longer.
Why is it important to have agent-to-agent transfer capabilities in MFT?
This ultimately comes down to resiliency. In GoAnywhere, when transferring a file from one agent to another, the file must pass through the central GoAnywhere server between source and destination. If the GoAnywhere server was unreachable due to a problem on the server or the network connection, the transfer would fail. The GoAnywhere server is a single-point-of-failure.
Is it difficult to navigate the help files in GoAnywhere?
It’s a common complaint on review sites like G2 and PeerSpot. The GoAnywhere documentation is a collection of lengthy PDFs, which are incredibly hard to navigate, leaving you rummaging through documentation using the PDF viewer search function – but only if you opened the right PDF!
Is GoAnywhere suitable for enterprise environments?
It depends on the use case. Every vendor wants to sell to enterprises but many lack the ability to scale, maintain high levels of up-time, and handle the volume needed by enterprise customers. For example, GoAnywhere doesn’t have zero-downtime update capabilities which means each update requires a period in which the solution is offline – and you can't afford to miss a GoAnywhere security patch.
